JoAnn
Matthews has been involved with students having challenging behaviors
for the pat 20 years. Her career began as a special education teacher
in a small rural school with a high at-risk population in southeast Louisiana.
There, her students excelled beyond the expectations of the regular education
students. Her talents in dealing with at-risk students were quickly recognized
by her district, which led to her being promoted to a middle school principal for a school containing
a large number of at-risk students.
As principal, she introduced new
innovating programs, which reduced the absentee rate, reduced the out-of-school
suspension rate, increased parental involvement, and most important, increased
test scores. Within a very short time, her demands on her teachers, students,
and parents had changed the image of the school from one, which was not
student friendly to one, which had parents waiting for an opportunity
to send their children to. Her leadership skills led to her becoming Supervisor
of Personnel and later Superintendent in her district.
Her sense of humor, combined with
a message based on real life experiences has made her a sought after speaker.
Her message is one that everyone wants to hear.
